Are there still Copts in Egypt? ›

Although integrated in the larger Egyptian nation state, the Copts have survived as a distinct religious community forming around 5 to 20 percent of the population, though estimates vary. They pride themselves on the apostolicity of the Egyptian Church whose founder was the first in an unbroken chain of patriarchs.

The official religion is Islam and a large majority of Egyptians are practicing Sunni Muslims.

In the autumn of 332 bce Alexander the Great invaded Egypt with his mixed army of Macedonians and Greeks and found the Egyptians ready to throw off the oppressive control of the Persians. Alexander was welcomed by the Egyptians as a liberator and took the country without a battle.

Egyptian authorities only recognize Judaism, Islam and Christianity, allowing them public worship unlike other faiths. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and other senior figures have emphasized religious tolerance. In 2019, Sisi's cabinet approved a number of churches.

The FCDO does not warn against travel to any of the main tourist destinations in Egypt, including Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Alexandria and the two Red Sea resorts of Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada.

While Egypt is considered to be very safe for tourists, including people from the United States, the country's Northern Sinai Peninsula is an exception. This is the only part of Egypt that is deemed to be potentially dangerous for tourists. In fact, it is considered to be a risky area even for ordinary Egyptians.

As of 2019, "Copts are generally understood to make up approximately 10 percent of Egypt's population," with an estimated population of 9.5 million (figure cited in the Wall Street Journal, 2017) or 10 million (figure cited in the Associated Press, 2019).

Copts- like my own family's - have a distinct genetic makeup as descendants of the Ancient Egyptians. The Coptic language, the same language spoken by the last Ancient Egyptians[3], is maintained and taught within the communities and passed on intergenerationally.

Adherents of the Coptic Orthodox Church make up Egypt's largest and most significant minority population, and the largest population of Christians in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). They make up the largest share of the approximately 20 million Christians in Egypt.
